Sicario is one of my favorite films from the past few years. It was the first movie that brought director Denis Villeneuve to my attention. And though I am excited for the sequel and the return of Benicio Del Toro, the director is gone and so is cinematographer Roger Deakins. Although I am curious, I don't have that much faith in it and am not sure that the story of Sicario needed a continuation.
#10 Sicario 2: Soldado
I have mixed feelings on Disney's remakes of its classic films. Some of them are great. Some of them are not. I don't have a lot of faith for this movie, but it has potential. I absolutely love Mary Poppins. It was one of the few movies I grew up with as a child and it has only improved as I've gotten older. I watch it at least once a year. I can't imagine this movie will recreate the magic of the original. But I can always hope.
#9 Mary Poppins Returns
The last two Mission: Impossible films have been fantastic action movies. It's amazing that this film franchise has been going for over twenty years with most of the same cast returning for each movie. If there was ever a movie I was excited to watch just to have a great time, it's this movie.
#8 Mission: Impossible 6
I really enjoyed Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was a little messy but set up a lot of interesting characters and brought the wizarding world to the United States. I am absolutely fascinated by the world of Harry Potter and the story behind Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Yes, there are a lot of sequels planned and some are sure to suffer, but I hope this one works.
#7 Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Two words: Alex Garland. The writer/director of Ex Machina returns to that same chair in Annihilation. Though I didn't really like the end of Ex Machina, I loved everything that came before it. The trailer for this film has me hoping this is the sci-fi movie of the year.
#6 Annihilation
Yes, the trailer was great but I am not fooled as easily. Yes, it was dark and I love dark Marvel films, but the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron was dark too and that film had very low emotional stakes. There has been quite a bit of buildup so hopefully this one is good.
#5 Avengers: Infinity War
This is the first time I've had a Star Wars film on this list that isn't in the #1 on the list. That has to do with a general disinterest in this film and the problems that have occurred behind the scenes of this film. I am curious to see what they do, but don't have as much interest in Han Solo as a character. There is talk about this film as a gangster film. I don't think Disney will be able to go all the way with that risky of a tone for their film.
#4 Solo: A Star Wars Story
My favorite comic film series is the X-Men. X-Men: Days of Future Past is my favorite comic book film and one of my favorite films in general. I like the fact that the newer X-Men films are more risky than other superhero films, even if I wasn't that big a fan of X-Men: Apocalypse. This trailer seemed like the first superhero film turned into a horror film. I'm in.
#3 The New Mutants
I haven't read the book. I can't read, in fact. But I can pray for a new adventure movie from Steven Spielberg. The trailer, which features a new virtual reality to deal with overpopulation, seems somehow realistic and believable. I like it and want to see more.
#2 Ready Player One
The Incredibles is one of the best superhero films ever made. It is the best Pixar film ever made and up there as one of the best animated films of all time. I am both tremendously excited and tremendously scared for this film's release. I wasn't sold by the trailer, because it showed off more comedy than drama and, though The Incredibles was funny, its greatest qualities were its darker aspects. No movie has me more nervous in 2018.
