January Preview
As I have said in previous years, the first weekend of January is a cinematic wasteland. Expect some more reviews from awards season films of 2017.
The second week of January sees the release of the critically acclaimed Paddington 2. I didn't see the first film until a year or so after its release. I have to say, it was very charming and enjoyable. Compare that to the latest Liam Neeson action movie The Commuter, which seems like every other Liam Neeson action movie ever made. Proud Mary looks like the exact same thing as Atomic Blonde from 2017, and Condorito: La Pelicula looks like bad animation. The most interesting thing here is Saturday Church, a small, critically-acclaimed independent film that feels like an awards type of movie but is being released just afterwards. Strange.
The third week of January sees the release of 12 Strong, which reminds me of Michael Bay's 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Also in release this week are Den of Thieves and Forever My Girl, both of which look like they belong in January. But then there's Mary and the Witch's Flower. I love animated films and pray this one is 2018's Your Name.
The last week of January features the second sequel to The Maze Runner, a mediocre movie I saw back in 2015.

February Releases
Wincester looks like generic January horror movie garbage except it's being released in February.
The only thing good about Fifty Shades Freed is that it's the last one in the franchise. Peter Rabbit looks awful and The 15:17 to Paris reminds me of Sully; the event itself is so short, so how are they going to make a feature-length movie around it?
The third week in February is where the fun begins. That fun consists of Black Panther, the first mainstream, black superhero film. It has been hyped up ever since it was announced and early reviews are stellar. The trailers didn't really sell me but I'm pretty excited now. Also released this weekend is Aardman Animation's Early Man. I'm a huge fan of Aardman and their style of animation and I am hoping they knock this one out of the park. Also released this weekend is Pureflix's Samson. No comment.
The last week of February sees the release of Annihilation, Alex Garland's follow-up to Ex Machina, which was an incredibly well-directed movie that had me until the end. The trailers for this film look amazing and I'm really excited to see what this movie brings to the sci-fi table. Also released this weekend is Game Night, which looks like a mashup of a generic Jason Bateman comedy and Clue. Who knows, it might even be good. Don't have high hopes though.
