Best Picture Discussion

I'm very confident in the top 5 films getting nominated and reasonably confident about the top 7 films getting nominated. As for an early winner, the only real choices are the top three and even then, the top two are pretty far ahead of Manchester By The SeaLa La Land won everything at the Golden Globes, which may come back to bite it if people begin to resent the film. Moonlight also has its fair share of wins and supporters. Given how well it is expected to perform in the acting, writing, and directing categories, I wouldn't be surprised if it managed to win.

Best Director Discussion

I'm confident in the top three. The Director's Guild has thrown this off, as it nominated Garth Davis for Lion when he hasn't been nominated anywhere else. I can easily see a Denis Villeneuve slipping into the mix as well. I'm torn here between the top two for the win. We'll see how everything else plays out.

Best Actor Discussion

This category is pretty locked down I think. I'm confident in my top four and think Viggo Mortensen will make it in there too over the other contenders. Casey Affleck has this in the bag too; he's won everything coming before.

Best Actress Discussion

I'm confident in the top three, again. This is a tough one because there isn't a whole lot of overlap between the various precursor awards as to who will fill the remaining slots. If La La Land takes home the big trophies, Emma Stone will win. If not, it will probably go to either Natalie Portman or Amy Adams; I'm not sure which either.

Best Supporting Actor Discussion

Aaron Taylor-Johnson's win at the Golden Globes was very surprising, so I had to put him in the mix over Lucas Hedges, who has more precursor awards. Pretty confident about this category as well and think Mahershala Ali still has this in the bag.

Best Supporting Actress Discussion

This seems like a pretty sure category. I'm confident in all five of these and think Viola Davis will definitely win for her amazing performance in a film full of good performances.

Best Original Screenplay Discussion

People were very surprised when Kenneth Lonergan didn't win for Manchester By The Sea at the Golden Globes. So was I, and even though I absolutely love La La Land, I think this one belongs to Manchester By The Sea. Not a lot of other options here either, I don't know of any other film that could make it into this category.

Best Adapted Screenplay Discussion

This is another difficult one, thanks to Deadpool and some strange precursors. Typically this category contains most of the heavy hitters in the Best Picture category but not this year. We'll see how things turn out but I'm confident only in my top two.

Best Original Score Discussion

This is a difficult category to judge and the precursors are almost always wrong. Still, I think the top three are pretty locked and I hope Justin Hurwitz wins for his amazing score in La La Land.

Best Cinematography Discussion

Usually I can't predict this category at all, but I'm really surprised to see that, of the likely nominees, I agree with all of the ones for films I've seen (everything but Nocturnal Animals). All of these were beautiful and I really hope Hell or High Water makes it in, because that film was so well-shot.

Best Visual Effects Discussion

This is also a difficult category to judge but I think the top five are pretty locked in. The Jungle Book should win. Nothing even came close this year.

Best Animated Film Discussion

This is a category where I think the top four are locked, but something always manages to sneak in. Last year and the year before, there were some really obscure films that made the cut. They were worth checking out too. This year should definitely go to Zootopia for combining an excellent script with some fantastic animation. If the award went to the best animation, I could make a case for Kubo and the Two Strings, but that film's story was very weak.

None...? I didn't see too many good animated films this year.

Best Picture Discussion

I'm surprised I managed to pick out all of the nominees this year, especially considering that the number of films nominated could have been anywhere between five and ten. And I think they all deserve to be there. Obviously I want La La Land to win, but I wouldn't mind if Hell or High Water took home the grand prize.

Best Director Discussion

No big surprises here. I'm glad Denis Villeneuve got some recognition considering his great track record. I don't think Arrival is as good as the critics, but I think it was very well directed. The other four directors all deserve to be there, though if I could take out Kenneth Lonergan and replace him with David Mackenzie for his incredible work on Hell or High Water, I would do it.

Best Actor Discussion

I got all of these right. Surprisingly this category was pretty scarce this year; usually there are ten actors who could have made the cut. The two strongest performances here, I think, are from Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington. Ryan Gosling might win as a result of riding the coattails of La La Land, but I doubt it.

Best Actress Discussion

The biggest surprise of the season here is the lack of a nomination for Amy Adams, who should have been in the running. Of those nominated, I've only seen Emma Stone (who should win) and Meryl Streep (who is great, as usual).

Best Supporting Actor Discussion

Despite Aaron Taylor-Johnson's win at the Golden Globes, he still wasn't nominated and, having seen Nocturnal Animals, I wish he had been nominated along with Michael Shannon; they both give terrific performances. Lucas Hedges is the weak link among the nominees. Jeff Bridges was great as himself in Hell or High Water but I would have preferred it if Ben Foster was nominated in his place.

Best Supporting Actress Discussion

No surprises and Viola Davis should win. I wish I could swap out Octavia Spencer for Janelle Monae, whose performance is far more memorable.

Best Original Screenplay Discussion

This was a crazy category given how the Academy changed how some of the films would be categorized. As a result, Mike Mills was nominated for 20th Century Women and The Lobster made the cut. I'm glad some lesser-known films made it; this category is typically where that can happen.

Best Adapted Screenplay Discussion

Again, the category swap made this one a little tricky to predict. The one surprise that I would remove is Luke Davies for Lion; some of the writing in that film is confusing or flat. Instead, I would put in Taika Waititi for his hilarious Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Best Original Score Discussion

This is always my favorite category. The big surprise here is the inclusion of Thomas Newman for Passengers. The score is decent, but not noteworthy. Any of the three suggestions I've included are better. The winner here should be a no-brainer. It's gotta be Justin Hurwitz for La La Land; one of the best scores ever written.

Best Cinematography Discussion

No surprises and nothing undeserved. I haven't seen Silence, but here great things about how it looks. I just wish there was room for Giles Nuttgens, whose work on Hell or High Water is integral to that film's themes.

Best Visual Effects Discussion

This was a surprising category given the inclusion of Kubo and the Two Strings, an animated film. Still, the "making of" that film deserves an award in its own right. I would swap Deepwater Horizon out for The BFG if I could.

Best Animated Film Discussion

Zootopia deserves to win and I hope it does. I haven't seen either of the two surprises but will make sure I do so in 2017, a year I hope is better for animated fare.

Best Picture Discussion

Predicted winner: La La Land

Even though there has been a lot of backlash to La La Land (some of which is legitimate, though it doesn't really take away from the film for me), I still think it will run away with this award. Moonlight is its only real competition and, though I think it has some problems, it might win. If anything else won, I would be very surprised.

Best Director Discussion

Predicted winner: Damien Chazelle - La La Land

La La Land is Damien Chazelle's baby. If it wins anything, it will be in this category and in best original score. He really deserves it too - this type of film is incredibly difficult to make.

Best Actor Discussion

Predicted winner: Denzel Washington - Fences

Casey Affleck was the frontrunner for so long, and he might still win. But personal issues have really hurt his chances and Denzel Washington has started to pick up some major awards for his work. As a result, it looks like Denzel might win his third Oscar for his showy performance in Fences.

Best Actress Discussion

Predicted winner: Emma Stone - La La Land

Emma Stone is at the center of La La Land, and her performance is easily the best of the film. Her vulnerability in so many of her scenes is incredible and she deserves to win this. Isabelle Huppert or Natalie Portman might sneak in to win this, but I doubt it.

Best Supporting Actor Discussion

Predicted winner: Mahershala Ali - Moonlight

After having watched Moonlight a second time, I see how powerful Mahershala Ali's performance is in the film. He is essential to the main character's evolution and deserves to win. I would be happy if Michael Shannon got some recognition for his intense performance in Nocturnal Animals, but this category is pretty much locked down.

Best Supporting Actress Discussion

Predicted winner: Viola Davis - Fences

Viola Davis has so much more presence in her film than any of the other nominees, and she is tremendous. Nobody else could win this award.

Best Original Screenplay Discussion

Predicted winner: Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By The Sea

Manchester By The Sea will likely walk away with this award or no award. The entire movie was Kenneth Lonergan's vision, so he will probably be awarded here. But Damien Chazelle is also a likely contender.

Best Adapted Screenplay Discussion

Predicted winner: Barry Jenkins - Moonlight

This award is Barry Jenkins' to lose. One could make a case for Eric Heisserer's work in Arrival, though I don't think the movie quite holds up after the twist.

Best Original Score Discussion

Predicted winner: Justin Hurwitz - La La Land

The score for this film is the best of the year. The score is so important to how this film works and feels, and Justin Hurwitz knocked it out of the park.

Best Cinematography Discussion

Predicted winner: Linus Sandgren - La La Land

The cinematography for La La Land makes everything look beautiful. I also really liked the cinematography for Lion, but this one is going to go to La La Land.

Best Visual Effects Discussion

Predicted winner: The Jungle Book

This film looks incredible. The only thing even close to The Jungle Book is Doctor Strange, which might become the first Marvel film to win an Oscar.

Best Animated Film Discussion

Predicted winner: Zootopia

The message, writing, and wit of Zootopia made it one of the best animated films I've ever seen. It deserves this award. Kubo and the Two Strings might win for its incredible animation, but the film's quality really ends there.

Best Picture Discussion

Predicted winner: La La Land

Actual winner: Moonlight

What an unprecedented mistake! La La Land is mistakenly announced as the winner for Best Picture. Halfway through the speeches, the mistake was revealed and Moonlight won. Wow.

I can't say I'm terribly happy, as I thought La La Land was the best of the bunch, but this controversy should at least bring more attention to Moonlight, a small film that usually doesn't get this type of attention.

Best Director Discussion

Predicted winner: Damien Chazelle - La La Land

Actual winner: Damien Chazelle - La La Land

Damien Chazelle did a fantastic job directing La La Land and was rewarded.

Best Actor Discussion

Predicted winner: Denzel Washington - Fences

Actual winner: Casey Affleck - Manchester By The Sea

The backlash to Casey Affleck apparently wasn't enough to lose him this award. I thought Denzel would take this one.

Best Actress Discussion

Predicted winner: Emma Stone - La La Land

Actual winner: Emma Stone - La La Land

Emma Stone anchored this film and deserved it. I wish I had seen Jackie, Loving, and Elle to be able to appreciate the other performances in this category.

Best Supporting Actor Discussion

Predicted winner: Mahershala Ali - Moonlight

Actual winner: Mahershala Ali - Moonlight

In a film full of fantastic performances, Mahershala Ali stood out, especially on second viewing. His character sticks around long after Mahershala leaves the screen, and it's because of how strong his work is in the first act of the film.

Best Supporting Actress Discussion

Predicted winner: Viola Davis - Fences

Actual winner: Viola Davis - Fences

In a movie full of Denzel Washington's overwhelming presence, Viola Davis stands out. Her role is critical in unraveling the film's examination of life and changing times. She deserved this award.

Best Original Screenplay Discussion

Predicted winner: Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By The Sea

Actual winner: Kenneth Longergan - Manchester By The Sea

Manchester By The Sea will likely walk away with this award or no award. The entire movie was Kenneth Lonergan's vision, so he will probably be awarded here. But Damien Chazelle is also a likely contender.

Best Adapted Screenplay Discussion

Predicted winner: Barry Jenkins - Moonlight

Actual winner: Barry Jenkins - Moonlight

I don't particularly like two writing choices in Moonlight, which really detracted from the movie for me, but Barry Jenkins won this award anyway. I would have preferred the writers for Hidden Figures.

Best Original Score Discussion

Predicted winner: Justin Hurwitz - La La Land

Actual winner: Justin Hurwitz - La La Land

The score for this film is the best of the year.

Best Cinematography Discussion

Predicted winner: Linus Sandgren - La La Land

Actual winner: Linus Sandgren - La La Land

The film looks beautiful. In fact, all of these films look beautiful and I would have been happy with any of the choices.

Best Visual Effects Discussion

Predicted winner: The Jungle Book

Actual winner: The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book is one of my favorite films of the year. I'm glad its fantastic visual effects received recognition.

Best Animated Film Discussion

Predicted winner: Zootopia

Actual winner: Zootopia

The message, writing, and wit of Zootopia made it one of the best animated films I've ever seen. It deserved this award.
