Film Info:
Girls Trip is about Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall), Sasha (Queen Latifah), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish), a group of women who called themselves the “Flossy Posse” back in high school. After a long hiatus, they meet up again to go with Ryan on a trip to New Orleans, where Ryan will be speaking with her husband Stewart about their relationship and her best-selling book. But it’s New Orleans and her friends want to have fun. Hijinks ensue, but not without a little drama too.
This film is a two-hour long comedy that never feels boring, always feels like it’s moving forward, and always stays engaging. That’s really rare. All of the credit goes to the chemistry and performances from the film’s four leads. Each character has a distinct and unique personality that directly affect what happens to each of them. It does take a little while to set everything up. Once it’s going, however, it really rolls. The middle of this film is where it is the funniest, with a particular sequence involving hallucinating that was particularly enjoyable.
And while the comedy is always present (most of it comes from Tiffany Haddish as the most energetic and foul-mouthed of the bunch), there is a dramatic storyline that appears pretty early on and builds through the movie. This drama was really well-executed and actually got to me. Seriously, the end of this movie features a speech scene that was genuinely suspenseful; I was really worried for what was going to happen to these characters because the movie made me care. By the end of it, I was more impressed with the drama than I was with the comedy.
Overall, I really enjoyed Girls Trip for both the comedy and the drama. It was very satisfying, well-paced, and well-acted. Other than a slow start, this movie was a great time and I would definitely recommend it for those who enjoy crass humor.
