Paddington is about Paddington (voiced by Ben Whishaw), a marmalade-loving bear who moves to London in search of a home. A British family consisting of a loving mother (Sally Hawkins), an inventive son, a bored daughter, and an uptight father (Hugh Bonneville) decide to adopt him for the night. If you can get over the fact that everyone seems to react incredibly well to a talking bear, this movie turns into a lot of really zany fun as Paddington gets into all sorts of trouble while searching for the explorer who introduced his family in Peru to humans, speech, and marmalade.
From the description, you might imagine that this film is not to be taken too seriously. Thankfully, it knows what it is and has a lot of fun with it. Seriously, this movie was a lot of fun as Paddington gets into the most creative of situations. His chemistry with the family and, in particular, the uptight father, make for excellent fun. And that’s all there really is to this film; it’s fast-paced, enjoyable, often hilarious fun. The characters in the film all work really well together.
If there is one thing that just didn’t work too well in the film, it was the villain. A film like this doesn’t need a villain; there is enough conflict with Paddington trying to fit into his new family. Nonetheless, there is a villain in the form of Nicole Kidman. She was just as over-the-top as you’d expect, but she really didn’t need to be in the film.
Apart from that, this film is very entertaining. Paddington and his family made for a great comedic bunch.
