Film Info:

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is about Michael Bryce                                                                                                  (Ryan Reynolds), a private bodyguard who has to                                                                                                      escort Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson) to court so                                                                                                that he can testify as a witness of the crimes against                                                                                                humanity committed by Dukhovich (Gary Oldman).                                                                                                  The only problem is that Darius Kincaid is a                                                                                                                dangerous hitman, and more than capable of                                                                                                            defending himself.

What I loved about this movie was its                                                                                                                  infectious commitment to humor without harming                                                                                                  the focus of the story. Almost everything in this                                                                                                        movie is a joke, mostly from Samuel L. Jackson’s attitude towards the whole “escort” thing. He’s the real driving force in this film and he is, for all intents and purposes, playing himself. There isn’t a dull moment in this film. Even the romantic subplots were mostly played for laughs. There isn’t an ounce of substance or originality here; this is a movie that was made purely for entertainment purposes and should be judged as such.

This works really well because Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson have fantastic chemistry. Each is playing a familiar type of character and they’re both clearly having a lot of fun. Samuel L. Jackson, in particular, looks like he’s absolutely having a blast, spouting out his signature lines with his fantastic delivery. There are so many times when Samuel L. Jackson just says something about Ryan Reynolds that just crack me up. Some of it even feels like improv as it was so naturally delivered.

There are a few twists in this movie and, while you see them coming, the movie doesn’t play them for drama - it plays them for comedy, so the predictability doesn’t really spoil the fun.

That’s really all there is to say about this movie. Is it a great movie? No. But will it entertain you? Absolutely. I had a blast watching this and loved pretty much every second of it. Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds pretty much play themselves to make it easy.
